Matemático y egiptólogo francés. Mientras actuaba como ingeniero en la expedición de Napoleón a Egipto, condujo (1798–1801) investigaciones antropológicas y escribió el prefacio de la monumental
Description de l'Égypte [Descripción de Egipto], cuya publicación supervisó (1809–28). En 1808 Napoleón le concedió el título de barón. En matemática es conocido principalmente por su trabajo en conducción del calor (1807–22), por el uso de la serie de
Fourier para resolver ecuaciones diferenciales y por el concepto relacionado, la
transformada de Fourier. Como científico y humanista personifica el espíritu del intelectualismo francés de la era de la revolución.
